Jim’s background as a patent attorney with over 25 years of experience including patent preparation, prosecution, counseling and litigation in a variety of industries has enabled him to develop an invaluable expertise in all patent matters. Jim’s refined skills in patent drafting, counseling and argumentation has earned him a great deal of respect and esteem in the technical community. Jim’s technical expertise is recognized in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). In 2014, he was asked by the USPTO to conduct a training seminar for an assembly of patent examiners on the essentials of oil refining technology.
Jim’s background as a patent practitioner and chemical engineer has afforded him the technical knowledge and expertise to work with inventors and engineers in a deeper way so to draft sustainably broad patent claims. Jim works closely with his clients in order to develop the best strategy for obtaining the broadest and most effective patent portfolios.
As Senior Patent Counsel for Honeywell UOP in Des Plaines, Illinois for 18 years, Jim managed a docket of over 1000 active patents and applications, counseled on freedom to practice for new processes and products, and managed preparation of patent applications by outside counsel. In addition, he managed due diligence and performed integration for a business and patent portfolio acquisition and reviewed and drafted agreements in the oil and gas refining industry. Jim also trained Honeywell’s patent specialists in patent drafting and argumentation.
Prior to working in-house for Honeywell, Jim worked for five years at Molex in Lisle, Illinois. Molex is a leading global supplier of advanced electronic components and solutions. Jim’s experience at Molex honed his skills in preparing and prosecuting patent applications and clearing new products for the electrical connector industry. In addition, he negotiated commercial agreements and managed a litigation docket while with Molex.
